The 1999 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition, funded in part by AFFIMER, located and positively identified the remains of George Leigh Mallory on Mount Everest in an attempt to solve one of the key mysteries of mountaineering: Who first summitted Mount Everest?

"Four days after Norton and Somervell's attempt, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, making a final summit bid with oxygen, walked out of their lives and into legend..."
—Jochen Hemmleb, Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition Historian

Following this successful expedition, AFFIMER was given custody of the Mallory artifacts retrieved by the expedition team. Fulfilling its mission to offer various institutions the opportunity to conduct research and for the public to view the artifacts, AFFIMER worked closely with the Washington State Historical Society to arrange for the proper handling and storage of the collection. Research was performed by several historians and archeologists and a complete photographic record was compiled. Following this, the Historical Society worked with AFFIMER to arrange a series of public shows in the USA.

These included an exhibit in Washington, D.C. at the National Geographic Society Explorers Hall, in San Francisco in conjunction with the American Himalayan Foundation, and a very successful show at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington. At the conclusion of these shows, the artifacts were returned to the Royal Geographic Society in London, at the request of the Mallory family. The artifacts are currently on display at the Rheged Mountaineering Center in the English Lakes District near Penrith.
